The Israeli parliament has passed a law allowing the government to ban TV channels, including Al Jazeera. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to close the network's local office, citing national security threats. The US has expressed concern over the move. With foreign journalists banned from Gaza, Al Jazeera reporters are among the few covering the conflict. The ban can be renewed every 45 days until July or the end of significant fighting. Netanyahu criticized Al Jazeera as a "terrorist channel," which the network denies, holding him responsible for staff safety.

After 132 years, GE has split into three independent companies: GE Aerospace, GE Vernova (energy), and GE HealthCare. This strategic move aims to enhance focus and performance in each sector. GE Aerospace and GE Vernova are now trading separately on the New York Stock Exchange, with GE Aerospace retaining the iconic GE symbol and GE Vernova trading under GEV. CEO Larry Culp's transformation plan, focusing on debt reduction and operational efficiency, has boosted GE's market cap from $92 billion to $192 billion. Analysts predict strong growth for GE Aerospace, driven by rising demand for aftermarket services and delays in jet deliveries.

A powerful 7.4 earthquake hit Taiwan on April 3, 2023, at 7:58 am, centered south-southwest of Hualien. The tremors reached Taipei, and Japan issued a tsunami alert for the Ryukyu islands. A 30 cm tsunami struck Yonaguni, with predictions for Iriomote, Ishigaki, and Okinawa. Aftershocks persisted, and social media captured the devastation. Taiwan, on the Pacific Ring of Fire, faced internet outages, trapped individuals, and damaged infrastructure. A large section of the uninhabited Guishan Island collapses into the ocean.

Researchers use 5,000 tiny robots in a mountaintop telescope to peer 11 billion years into the past with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). This enables them to map the early cosmos and trace its evolution, revealing insights into dark energy, which drives the universe's accelerating expansion. DESI's data produced the largest 3D cosmic map and the most precise measurements of early universe expansion, offering potential new insights into dark energy's behavior which include the release of the largest 3D map of the universe featuring more than six million galaxies.

Zimbabwe’s central bank has introduced a new gold-backed currency, Zim Gold (ZiG), to combat inflation and stabilize the economy. The currency, supported by foreign currencies, gold, and precious minerals, will circulate alongside other currencies. Banks will convert existing Zimbabwe dollar balances into ZiG, which features denominations from one to 200 ZiG and images of gold ingots and Balancing Rocks. Citizens have 21 days to exchange old cash. The move aims to simplify and stabilize Zimbabwe’s financial system amid high inflation and economic challenges.

Peter Pellegrini, won Slovakia’s presidential election, defeating pro-Western diplomat Ivan Korčok with 53% of the vote. Korčok, who received 47%, conceded defeat. Pellegrini promised to keep Slovakia on the side of peace, advocating for talks with Russia, while Korčok opposed conceding Ukrainian territory. The Ukraine war dominated the election, reflecting deep divisions. Analysts warn Pellegrini’s victory could threaten Slovakia’s liberal democracy and empower extremist forces within the EU.

Jorge Glas, a former vice president of Ecuador, was arrested by Ecuadorean police at the Mexican Embassy in Quito, following what Mexico called a forced entry violating international law. Glas, who had been granted political asylum by Mexico earlier that day, was sentenced to prison for corruption. This rare embassy intrusion led Mexico to suspend diplomatic relations with Ecuador, escalating already high tensions between the two countries.
