The Vatican has struck a landmark deal with Italy to develop a 430-hectare solar farm at Santa Maria Galeria, aiming to become the world’s first carbon-neutral state. The project, expected to cost under €100 million, will meet the Vatican’s energy needs while preserving agricultural use and minimizing environmental impact. Italy will count the project toward EU clean energy targets, and any excess power will go to local communities. The Vatican will be exempt from import taxes on solar panels but won’t receive standard Italian solar incentives. Contracts may open for bids once Italy’s parliament approves the plan.
