Protests erupt in Ecuador’s capital, Quito, as demonstrators both supporting and opposing President Daniel Noboa rallied after a state of emergency took effect in 10 provinces. The unrest, led by the Indigenous Confederation, began over the government’s removal of a fuel subsidy that raised diesel prices from $1.80 to $2.80 per gallon. Police dispersed parts of the crowd with tear gas but reported no injuries. The government cited “serious internal unrest,” while Indigenous leaders condemned the decree as suppressing legitimate dissent.
