Myanmar’s acting president, Myint Swe, takes medical leave, transferring his duties to military chief Min Aung Hlaing, according to the army. The announcement on state-run MRTV says Min Aung Hlaing is authorized to handle National Defence and Security Council matters during Myint Swe’s absence. Myint Swe, 73, is suffering from health issues, including psychomotor retardation and malnutrition. He was previously vice president under Aung San Suu Kyi’s government and became acting president after the 2021 military coup.

Scientists in Brazil have discovered high levels of cocaine in the muscles and livers of 13 sharpnose sharks near Rio de Janeiro. The cocaine concentrations in these sharks are 100 times higher than in other marine animals previously studied. The source is believed to be illegal drug labs or excrement from drug users. All the female sharks in the study were pregnant, but the effects on their unborn young are unknown. Further research is needed.

Researchers from the Scottish Association for Marine Science have discovered that metals on the seafloor can produce oxygen in darkness, challenging the belief that all oxygen on Earth comes from sunlight-driven photosynthesis. They believe electrically charged minerals called polymetallic nodules may split seawater into hydrogen and oxygen through seawater electrolysis. Tests both on the seafloor and in labs showed increased oxygen levels near these nodules, suggesting an alternative oxygen source.
