WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has reached a plea agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, allowing him to avoid extradition and be freed in exchange for a guilty plea to a conspiracy charge. Filed at the U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands, the agreement involves one count of conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information. Assange is scheduled to appear in court in Saipan on June 26 to enter his plea.

The European Union will formally launch accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova after member states agreed last week. The ceremony in Luxembourg on Tuesday will mark the start of a lengthy and challenging process, encouraging Ukraine, in particular, to move beyond its Soviet past. Despite Hungary's attempts to block the move, the bloc's 27 members reached an agreement. The negotiations will begin after the EU assesses their legislation for necessary reforms, with no guarantee of eventual membership, as seen with Turkey and Western Balkan states.

Thousands of protesters stormed Kenya’s parliament Tuesday, setting part of the building on fire and causing lawmakers to flee, in protest of proposed tax increases. The unrest, which President William Ruto condemned as "treasonous," resulted in several deaths as police opened fire. Journalists reported seeing at least three bodies, and medical workers confirmed five fatalities. Clashes spread to other cities, prompting the defense minister to deploy the military to support police in this "security emergency." The Finance Bill is withdrawn .

President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law on June 26 making English an official language of international communication in Ukraine. The law specifies positions requiring English proficiency and establishes its use in government and public sector offices. Zelensky introduced the bill in 2023, and it passed on June 4, with an amendment to support English-language movie theaters. A 2023 Kyiv International Institute of Sociology study found 51% of Ukrainians have some English knowledge, with 93% of parents wanting their children to improve their English skills. Polish and German follow as the next most common foreign languages.

Japan has lodged a protest with the U.S. embassy in Tokyo over two alleged sexual assault cases involving American service members in Okinawa. Vice Foreign Minister Masataka Okano met with U.S. Ambassador Rahm Emanuel, requesting disciplinary and preventive measures. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi emphasized the anxiety such incidents cause local residents. Prosecutors charged a 21-year-old Marine with assault in May, and a 25-year-old airman was charged in March for a December incident involving a teenage girl.

The Biden administration announced an 18-month extension and redesignation of temporary protected status (TPS) for up to 309,000 unauthorized Haitian migrants. TPS, while not a permanent legal status, protects against deportation, allows work permits, and sometimes travel authorization. This extension applies to Haitians already under TPS, while the redesignation allows Haitians in the U.S. since the beginning of the month to apply for initial TPS. The extension runs from Aug. 4, 2024, to Feb. 3, 2026, with registration details in the Federal Register notice.

Pixar's "Inside Out 2" has surpassed $1 billion at the global box office in under three weeks, setting a record for the fastest animated film to reach this milestone, according to Walt Disney Co. It is the highest-grossing movie of the year and the only one to cross the $1 billion mark so far. With rave reviews and critical acclaim, the film has held the top spot despite competition and has earned $57.4 million domestically in its third weekend. It is expected to break further records, surpassing "Incredibles 2" and "The Super Mario Bros." in earnings.
