The letter criticized Israel’s decision, stating it undermined the U.N.'s mission, which includes mediating conflicts and providing humanitarian support. Israel declared Guterres persona non grata after accusing him of failing to condemn Iranian missile strikes on Israel. India's decision not to sign the letter is seen as a significant divergence from the Global South and in furtherance to India's stand on UN as "Old Company and a bystander for two conflicts across the globe."
