Portugal requests additional fire-fighting planes from the EU as at least 15 wildfires rage in central and northern regions. One fire threatens homes near Albergaria-a-Velha, while over 800 firefighters battle multiple blazes in Aveiro district. Police have closed motorways, including the main highway between Lisbon and Porto, and evacuated several villages. Thick smoke blankets the area as authorities work to contain the fires and prevent further destruction.

Meta announced on Monday that it is banning Russian state media outlets like RT and Rossiya Segodnya from its platforms, accusing them of using deceptive tactics to conduct influence operations. This decision escalates Meta's previous measures, which had limited Russian state media's ability to run ads and reduced their post reach. Meta said the ban applies globally across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov criticized the move, calling it "unacceptable" and accusing Meta of selective actions against Russian media.

The World Bank Group announced on Thursday that it delivered a record $42.6 billion in climate finance for fiscal 2024, a 10% increase from the previous year. While this progress brings the bank closer to its goal of allocating 45% of total financing to climate projects by fiscal 2025, the funding still falls short of the trillions needed for the global clean energy transition. World Bank President Ajay Banga has expanded lending capacity to address climate change, pandemics, and other global crises alongside the bank's traditional development mission.

Negotiations for the world’s first pandemic prevention agreement has made significant progress at the World Health Organization (WHO) during the 11th round of discussions. From 9-20 September in Geneva, governments, civil society, and non-State actors advanced talks on a draft agreement, emphasizing equity and collaboration. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed the urgent need to finalize the agreement before future pandemics arise. The next negotiation round is scheduled for November. The goal is to conclude the agreement by 2024, ensuring better global preparedness and responses to future pandemics.

The Thwaites glacier in Antarctica, known as the “doomsday glacier,” is on the brink of collapse, threatening to raise sea levels by up to 65 centimeters and potentially 3.3 meters due to widespread ice sheet loss. Scientists from the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration revealed that warmer seawater is melting the glacier’s underside. While the collapse may not be immediate, reducing carbon emissions can slow the process, offering time to mitigate its catastrophic impacts.
