Bill on violence against women in question in Latvia...

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs has returned to parliament the law withdrawing Latvia from the Istanbul Convention, urging further review. The Saeima had voted on 31 October to exit the treaty, which combats violence against women and domestic abuse, with 56 lawmakers in favor, 32 opposed, and two abstentions. Rinkēvičs warned the move sends a “contradictory message” about Latvia’s commitment to international obligations and gender equality, emphasizing the need for consistency in the country’s human rights stance.

US government shutdown the longest in US history...

The U.S. government shutdown has become the longest in the nation’s history, entering its 35th day on Tuesday and surpassing the 2018–2019 record. The Senate failed for the 14th time to advance a House-passed bill to reopen the government, with the vote 54–44. Despite the deadlock, lawmakers signaled progress toward a possible deal this week. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said it’s time to end the standoff, as both parties face mounting political and economic pressure.

EU approves a revision of the EU Climate Law...

After months of gridlock, EU environment ministers have approved a revision of the EU Climate Law, setting the stage for the bloc’s 2035 global climate target to be unveiled at COP30 next week. The EU27 agreed to cut net greenhouse gas emissions by 66.25–72.5% below 1990 levels by 2035, encompassing all sectors and gases, including methane. This aligns with the EU’s 2040 goal of a 90% reduction. Denmark’s climate minister Lars Aagaard said the move reaffirms Europe’s leadership in global climate action.

Australia starts deporting non-citizens to Nauru...

Australia has begun deporting hundreds of non-citizens to Nauru under a bilateral agreement in which Canberra will pay A$2.5 billion (US$1.6 billion) over 30 years for Nauru to issue visas to deported individuals. The deal revives Australia’s offshore processing model. Nauru, the world’s third-smallest nation, suffers from severe phosphate pollution and one of the highest rates of type 2 diabetes globally.

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and U.S. President Donald Trump hold bilateral talks at the White House, resulting in $34.5 billion worth of economic agreements and trade contracts. The deals will see U.S. companies implement major projects across Uzbekistan. The meeting preceded the C5+1 Summit, which brought together leaders from Central Asia and the United States. Trump said Uzbekistan will invest nearly $35 billion now and over $100 billion in the next decade, marking a major deepening of U.S.–Uzbek economic ties.
