Major Shifts in Global Politics...

Global politics saw major shifts today. In Ivory Coast, ex-president Laurent Gbagbo and ex-Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam were barred from the presidential race, while five candidates, including President Alassane Ouattara and Simone Gbagbo, were approved. Norway’s Labour-led red–green coalition won 87 seats in parliamentary elections, while the Progress Party surged to 48. France’s Bayrou government collapsed after losing a no-confidence vote. The Philippines’ Senate elected Tito Sotto as president. Indonesia’s Prabowo Subianto reshuffled his cabinet, ousting finance minister Sri Mulyani, triggering market turmoil. Meanwhile, Ugandan police detained an opposition NUP deputy spokesperson during a politically sensitive bail hearing.

Gen Z-led protests bring change in Nepal...

Nepal plunged into chaos as Gen Z-led protests forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign amid government collapse. Protesters stormed and torched Parliament, attacked the residences of Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba and ex-PM Sher Bahadur Deuba, and brutally assaulted Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, whose condition remains unknown. President Ram Chandra Poudel’s home was vandalized, and party headquarters of the UML and Nepali Congress destroyed. Protesters stormed Nakhu Jail, freeing all inmates including opposition leader Rabi Lamichhane, before setting it ablaze. Tribhuvan International Airport was seized by the army, with major airlines suspending flights amid escalating civil unrest.

Change in Leadership in France after protests...

Sébastien Lecornu is sworn in as France’s new Prime Minister after François Bayrou’s government collapsed in a failed confidence vote on September 8. His appointment comes amid mass protests and strikes against Bayrou’s proposed 2026 budget, which sought to cut €43.8 billion from public spending. Demonstrators calling to “block everything” set fires and blocked highways and gas stations nationwide. Authorities deployed 80,000 police and gendarmes, making over 200 arrests by mid-morning, with tear gas used to disperse crowds as unrest spreads across France.

In a first, an AI-powered bot is a minister....

Albania has appointed Diella, an AI-powered bot, as minister in charge of public procurement, marking a world first. Prime Minister Edi Rama says Diella, whose name means “sun” in Albanian, will oversee and award all government tenders to private companies to eliminate corruption. Already active on the e-Albania platform as a virtual assistant issuing state documents, Diella now joins the cabinet virtually. While Rama hails this as a step toward 100% corruption-free tenders, skeptics argue corruption will persist, with some joking Diella will end up blamed.

Nepal gets its first female Prime Minister...

Nepal has appointed former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim prime minister, making her the country’s first female head of government. President Ram Chandra Poudel dissolved parliament and scheduled new elections for March 5, following violent protests that toppled the previous administration. Karki, 73, known for her anti-corruption stance during her tenure as chief justice (2016–2017), was sworn in Friday. The unrest, sparked by a rescinded social media ban, escalated into nationwide riots that left parliament, the presidential residence, and businesses in flames.

American Elon Musk calls for a change in UK...

Clashes erupted at the Unite the Kingdom rally in London, where protesters hurled bottles and projectiles at police, leaving four officers seriously injured, the Met Police said. Authorities reported 24 arrests for violent offences. The event drew further controversy when Elon Musk addressed protesters via videolink, warning of “massive uncontrolled migration” and calling for a change of government and dissolution of Parliament. Around 5,000 counter-protesters, mobilised by Stand Up To Racism, marched nearby.
