Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to withdraw from International Criminal Court...

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, announced their withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), denouncing it as a tool of “neo-colonialist repression.” The three nations, allied under the Alliance of Sahel States, have distanced themselves from Western powers and aligned more closely with Russia. In their joint statement, they accused the ICC of failing to address major atrocities and pledged to establish their own mechanisms for peace and justice. Withdrawal takes effect in one year.

China will no longer claim special treatment from WTO...

China has announced it will no longer claim Special and Differential Treatment (SDT) in future World Trade Organization negotiations, a status long criticized by the U.S. and Europe. The Commerce Ministry said the move aims to strengthen the global trading system amid rising tariffs and protectionism. Existing agreements remain unaffected. WTO chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala welcomed the step, calling it a key reform that removes a major point of contention over privileges for wealthier nations.

Syria addresses UN assembly after 60 years....

Syrian interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa addressed the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, becoming the first Syrian leader to do so in nearly 60 years. Al-Sharaa, who ousted Bashar al-Assad in December after a rebel-led offensive, declared Syria was “reclaiming its rightful place among nations” following decades of dictatorship. He voiced solidarity with Gaza and criticized Israel’s threats, while ongoing negotiations seek a security deal tied to the Golan Heights. His speech drew large public viewings across Syria.

Former French president sentenced to five years in prison...

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy over illicit funds linked to late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. The Paris court acquitted him of passive corruption and illegal campaign financing but ruled he enabled aides to seek Libyan support for his 2007 campaign. Sarkozy, 70, who denounced the case as political, plans to appeal but must still serve time. He was also fined €100,000.

A new citizenship-by-investment program in Botswana...

Botswana President Duma Boko announced plans for a citizenship-by-investment program to reduce reliance on diamonds, the country’s main export. With the diamond market slump causing a 3% economic contraction last year and another expected in 2025, the scheme aims to attract funds for housing, tourism, renewable energy, mining, and financial services. The required investment threshold is yet to be set. Botswana recently launched a sovereign wealth fund and partnered with consultancy Arton Capital to design the program.

Iraq to resume Oil exports after two years...

Iraq announces it will resume oil exports from the semiautonomous Kurdish region through Turkey’s Ceyhan port on Saturday, ending a halt of more than two years. Exports stopped in early 2023 after Iraq won an arbitration case against the Kurdish regional government’s independent sales. The restart, set at 240,000 barrels per day, is aimed at boosting revenues and easing tensions between Baghdad and Erbil, though disputes over revenue sharing and field control remain unresolved.

India snubs receiving trophy after win!

Indian players make a strong statement at a global arena against terrorism after their win against Pakistan in the Asia Cup cricket tournament held in Dubai.This comes after the first game between India, and Pakistan at the Asia Cup with the Indians refusing the hand shakes with their Pakistan counterparts.The final victory secured India’s ninth Asia Cup title. However, post-match drama gained momentum as Indian players celebrated without accepting the trophy or medals from ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s PCB chairman and Interior Minister.Meanwhile Pakistan’s PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi took the medals and trophy into his possession for which India plans for a formal complaint with the ICC.
