South Korea's Semiconductor exports increase despite US tariff...

South Korea posts record semiconductor exports in August, topping $15 billion, up nearly a third from 2024, despite U.S. tariff pressure. Strong Chinese demand and tariff exemptions on chips drove the surge, pushing overall exports to a historic $58.4 billion for the month. Exports to the U.S. fell 12% to $8.74 billion as steel, auto, and machinery faced higher tariffs. Meanwhile, autos ($5.5 billion) and shipbuilding ($3.14 billion) also marked their best-ever August performance.

“My Voice, My Choice” submits 1 million signatures...

The European citizens’ initiative “My Voice, My Choice” has submitted over 1 million signatures to the European Commission, urging the creation of an EU funding mechanism to make abortion more accessible. While 25 EU states allow voluntary termination, rules vary widely—from 10 weeks in Portugal and Croatia to 24 in the Netherlands. Poland and Malta retain highly restrictive laws. The Commission stressed the petition does not establish a European right to abortion and has until March to decide whether to act. Coordinator Nika Kovač highlighted that 20 million women in Europe lack safe access, leading to preventable deaths.

Mars has a solid inner core made of iron and nickel...

Scientists have confirmed that Mars has a solid inner core, similar to Earth’s, based on seismic data from NASA’s InSight lander, which detected over 1,300 marsquakes before shutting down in 2022. The study, published in Nature, shows the Martian inner core extends about 380 miles (613 km) from the planet’s center, made mostly of iron and nickel, with lighter elements such as oxygen likely present. This solid core is surrounded by a molten metal outer core, overturning earlier theories of a fully liquid Martian core.

Nepal bans social media platforms...

Nepal announced Thursday it will block access to social media platforms, including Facebook, after they failed to register with authorities under new rules aimed at curbing misuse. The government says fake accounts are spreading hate, rumours, and cybercrime in a country where 90% of the 30 million population use the internet. Platforms like TikTok, Viber, WeTalk, Nimbuzz, and Poppo Live complied, but Meta’s apps, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, did not. Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung said companies were given “enough time” to meet requirements.

Google fined €2.95 billion by European Commission

The European Commission has fined Google €2.95 billion for abusing its dominance in ad technology by self-preferencing its AdX exchange while controlling both publisher ad servers and ad-buying tools. Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera demanded Google propose remedies within 60 days or face stronger sanctions. Google called the fine “unjustified,” warning reforms could hurt European businesses. The ruling, delayed to avoid U.S. backlash, adds strain to already tense EU–US trade relations following a deal setting 15% tariffs on EU goods but leaving auto tariffs unresolved.

Zelenskyy rejects Putin’s invitation to meet in Moscow...

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected Vladimir Putin’s invitation to meet in Moscow, calling it unrealistic and proof that Russia is not serious about negotiations. Speaking to ABC News, Zelenskyy said he would not visit “the capital of this terrorist” while Ukraine remains under daily missile attacks, instead suggesting Putin come to Kyiv. The proposal comes after Trump’s Alaska summit with Putin, where he pushed for direct talks. Kremlin officials insisted the Moscow offer was “to talk, not capitulate,” but Zelenskyy dismissed it as insincere.

Last respects to Giorgio Armani...

Over 15,000 people gathered in Milan over the weekend to pay their respects to Giorgio Armani, who died Thursday at age 91. A funeral chamber was set up at the Armani Theatre, adorned with candles and white roses, where queues began forming early Sunday morning. Mourners included Milan’s mayor, designers Donatella Versace and Luisa Lusardi, Santo Versace, Dean and Dan Caten, and public figures like Attilio Fontana and Aurelio De Laurentiis. Celebrities and athletes also attended. Armani’s private funeral will be held Monday in Rivalta, Piacenza.
